Physical Activity and Breast Cancer

  • Breast cancer survivors who walk or do other kinds of moderate exercise for 3-5 hours per week are about 50% less likely to die from their disease than sedentary women.
  • Regular moderate exercise may:
    • Reduce side effects of cancer treatments (fatigue - nausea - depression - pain)
    • Reduce risk of recurrence
    • Reduce risk of ever receiving a cancer diagnosis
    • Improve self confidence and body image
    • Improve quality of life
  • Cancer patients and survivors can exercise safely with the support of health care providers and cancer exercise specialists.
  • Personal and community support help cancer survivors begin and maintain a regular exercise program.
